Cherenkov radiation of superluminal particles

چکیده
Any charged particle moving faster than light through a medium emits Cherenkov radiation. We show that charged particles moving faster than light through the vacuum emit Cherenkov radiation. How can a particle move faster than light? The weak speed of a charged particle can exceed the speed of light. By definition, the weak velocity ^v&w is ^C f inuvuC in&/^C f inuC in&, where v is the velocity operator and uC in& and uC f in& are, respectively, the states of a particle before and after a velocity measurement. We discuss the consistency of weak values and show that superluminal weak speed is consistent with relativistic causality.

متن کاملCherenkov-Curvature Radiation and Pulsar Radio Emission Generation
Electromagnetic processes associated with a charged particle moving in a strong circular magnetic field are considered in cylindrical coordinates. We investigate the relation between the vacuum curvature emission and Cherenkov emission and argue that, for the superluminal motion of a particle in the inhomogeneous magnetic field in a dielectric, the combined effects of magnetic field inhomogenei...
متن کاملThe Gravitational Cherenkov Radiation
An example of discontinuity of the energy-momentum tensor moving at superluminal velocity is discussed. It is shown that the gravita-tional Mach cone is formed. The power spectrum of the corresponding Cherenkov radiation is evaluated.

Cherenkov radiation is generated when relativistic charged particles move in a medium with refractive index larger than unity. Although, the refractive index is generally smaller than unity in X-ray region, in the vicinity of atomic absorption edges, the refractive index may exceed unity and Cherenkov radiation can be generated in soft X-ray region with a narrow band width. In this paper, the s...
متن کاملCherenkov radiation versus X-shaped localized waves.
Localized waves (LW) are nondiffracting ("soliton-like") solutions to the wave equations and are known to exist with subluminal, luminal, and superluminal peak velocities V. For mathematical and experimental reasons, those that have attracted more attention are the "X-shaped" superluminal waves. Such waves are associated with a cone, so that one may be tempted-let us confine ourselves to electr...
